Words

This is a post from one of my other blogs that I wrote about a year ago. I was asked to repost it here since unfortunately the other blog site will be closing down. I wrote this at a time in my life where there was a lot of hurtful things being said about a lot of people, myself included, and I just wanted to write something that would bring attention to the fact that our words can cut like knives if used poorly, or they could have the power to to restore life and build up if used wisely.
Words are powerful. Be careful how you use them. Because saying words you regret cannot be forgotten, just forgiven.

“The Wounded”
//There are times in our life when life just seems to beat us down. And there’s nothing we can really do about it. There are times when it seems like life just keeps knocking us down and we get to a point where we just stay down becuase we’re tired of getting back up only to be pushed down again. We start to lose hope. We start to think that nothing matters, that everything is pointless. It seems like no matter how hard we try, it’s never good enough. We can never please the people we are trying to please and so we’re just caught in this circle of hopelessness. It sucks when you try to do the right thing and you still get beaten down.

Words people say go deep. And I want people to be aware that what we say has a bigger affect on others than we always realize. We must be aware that our words are powerful. They have the power to build up or tear someone apart. In James, he cautions us to “tame” our tongue becase they are like rudders on a ship. James also says that from the same mouth can come praise to God and curses.
In 1 Thessalonians it says to “build each other up, just as you are doing” which implies that we should be using our words for GOOD, not evil.

As someone who’s been at both ends of this- I’ve been hurt and have hurt people with words, I just want to say that the damage goes deep. And it lasts. It’s a tough wound to heal becuase words (even if they are false) can be believed. The greatest lies that are ever told are the ones that contain the most truth. Think about it. People aren’t going to believe something unless it contains truth. So even lies can start to become someone’s reality becuase there is always some truth in lies. And THAT is why it takes so long for the healing to begin.
